Economic Development Committee

Purpose of the Committee:

To facilitate Bowen Island economic development and provide advice to Council about economic development for Bowen Island.


The Economic Development Committee (EDC) is a select committee of Council that acts in an advisory capacity to Council, with final decisions in all matters brought before the Committee resting with the Council.

The Committee will:

  • Develop the framework for and facilitate the development of action plans for economic strategies/initiatives for recommendation to Council;
  • Facilitate the development of action plans to implement Council’s approved economic strategies;
  • Organize, facilitate and participate in efforts to implement economic strategies/initiatives;
  • Monitor, evaluate and report progress and achievements;
  • Provide advice and support to staff and contractors;
  • Facilitate broad public involvement in economic development and provide educational opportunities related to planning and implementation;
  • Recommend programs to recognize and reward achievements;
  • Provide advice and recommendations to Council on matters referred to it by Council related to the committee’s purpose

On November 17th, 2016, Chris Staples of Rethink Solutions, provided the following presentations to the BIM Economic Development CommitteeBowen Island Earned Media Report and Bowen Island Community Brand Standards.

On October 18th, 2016 the EDC hosted an open meeting for Bowen businesses. Over 65 business owners were in attendance for a lively evening of discussion, small group exercises and networking. Important topics covered included:

On May 20, 2016, the EDC Business Retention and Expansion Sub-Committee will present the findings of extensive interviews with business people on Bowen Island. Click the following link fo that presentation:

On March 31, 2016 the Economic Development Committee joined forces with the BC Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training to host an all day workshop.
