Community Input Drives Change to Reduce Congestion, Improve Travel for Bowen Island

Summary

  • Weekly Dangerous Goods (DG) sailing departing Bowen Island will move from 4:40 p.m. to 1:55 p.m., effective June 3
  • Change reflects direct community and municipal input
  • Earlier sailing will reduce peak congestion, free up space on the busiest sailings, and support a smoother, more reliable travel experience

BC Ferries is adjusting the weekly Wednesday afternoon Dangerous Goods (DG) sailing schedule on the Horseshoe-Bay-Bowen Island route (Route 8), following engagement and overwhelmingly positive feedback with Bowen Island Municipality and the community.

Effective June 3, 2026, the weekly DG sailing departing Bowen Island will move from 4:40 p.m. to 1:55 p.m.
The schedule change is intended to help ease pressure on already busy afternoon sailings by shifting DG traffic to a less congested time of day. Shifting the DG sailing will reduce congestion in Snug Cove during peak travel time, making travel easier for community members while supporting reliable goods movement and essential deliveries.

“We appreciate this long-discussed change to the ferry schedule that will make it easier for students, contractors, and visitors leaving the island during peak times,” said Andrew Leonard, Mayor of Bowen Island.

“This is a practical change shaped directly by what we heard from the community,” said Brian Anderson, Vice President of Strategy and Planning. “The current timing was creating longer waits for some customers and adding pressure during the busiest part of the day. Moving it earlier helps ease congestion, free up space on peak sailings, make better use of available capacity throughout the day, and support more reliable deliveries and a more predictable travel experience for the wider community.”

The change was brought forward by Bowen Island Municipality following recent changes to on-island propane distribution, which were creating long return wait times for DG users and contributing to congestion during peak travel periods.

BC Ferries sought feedback from DG users, schools, service providers, and community representatives, while the municipality led broader outreach to residents and businesses. Feedback showed strong support for moving the sailing earlier, with no opposition identified. The engagement found that:

  • Commercial, resident, municipal, and visitor partners unanimously highlighted the challenges created by the late afternoon DG sailing, particularly for commuters and families travelling off island.
  • Respondents reported having to leave work or school early, wait for hours in the Snug Cove lineup, or both, with Wednesday afternoons described as extremely congested and access to sailings limited when it was most needed.
  • Respondents also raised concerns about the amount of space taken up by DG trucks waiting in Snug Cove for multiple sailings, especially in summer, noting this as further evidence that an earlier DG sailing would be better suited.
  • Parents, commuters, tradespeople, and local business owners strongly supported the change, highlighting fewer travel delays, and more reliable access to work, school, and essential travel.
  • Commercial DG operators noted that an earlier sailing would improve efficiency, reduce delays, and support timely delivery of critical supplies, including fuel, benefiting both residents and businesses on Bowen Island.

BC Ferries will monitor the change following implementation and assess performance after the peak travel season. For more information and updated schedules, visit www.bcferries.com.
