Bowen Island receives funding to develop Housing Needs Report

Aug 15 2019

Bowen Island Municipality has received a $15,000 grant through the Housing Needs Report Program, a partnership between the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and the Province of BC.

A Housing Needs Report will assess key housing needs, including the need for affordable housing, rental housing and homes for seniors, people with special needs, families and people at risk of homelessness. It will also help inform decisions to develop workforce housing to help employers retain employees and support local economic growth.

The planning grant will help the Municipality strengthen local understanding of housing needs and help inform local plans, policies, and development decisions through the development of a Housing Needs Report. New provincial legislation requires local governments to collect data, analyze trends and develop a report every five years on current and anticipated housing needs.

“We are grateful to the Province for their support.” said Mayor Gary Ander, “This report will assist the Municipality by providing an overview of our community’s housing needs, helping to inform our decision-making on housing priorities and projects.”

Completion of an up-to-date housing needs assessment is one step in Council’s strategic priority to advance housing initiatives as outlined in Island Plan 2019.
