Good news from BC Ferries: a message from the Mayor
I am pleased to announce that we have received news from BC Ferries that the Queen of Capilano vessel operations team has arranged to operate on a “Class A License” for the 7:30 am and possibly other weekday morning departures from Bowen Island, beginning Thursday October 18th and at least until the end of November. This means that passenger capacity will increase on peak weekday morning sailings that bring Bowen Island commuters and high school students to their destinations on the mainland.
BC Ferries will evaluate passenger loads during this period and determine whether the solution is to be made permanent.
This improvement to operations was made in response to concerns expressed by the community about overloads on recent morning sailings from Snug Cove when commuters and high school students were left behind despite available deck space. A Class A license will increase onboard staffing levels and operating costs, but will in turn increase passenger capacity by approximately 40 people.
I’d like to thank the BIM Transportation Advisory Committee and the Ferry Advisory Committee who advocate diligently on behalf of the Bowen Island community for improved service delivery from one of our most important stakeholders. I’d also like to thank BC Ferries for listening to the concerns of the community and providing such a positive response.
The Ferry Advisory Committee (a joint committee of Bowen Island residents and BC Ferries representatives), will be meeting at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 25th at Municipal Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
